Udon, it is Japanese fast food. There is always one store in every city, and it is a favorite food of the Japanese. It is cheap, fast, and delicious. Sushi, ramen, tempura, and many other delicious foods are available, but you must try udon at least once in Japan.

Udon is one of my favorite food!

What is UDON?

Udon is a thick noodle made from wheat flour, and it is prepared and served in various ways, like hot and cold, with egg on top, and with curry. But the most common way is KAKE UDON(かけうどん). It comes with hot soup made from dashi, soy sauce, mirin, and thinly chopped scallions. And also, Bukkake Udon(ぶっかけうどん) is very popular. This is cold udon with soy sauce. Yes, Udon is simple food.

Where Can I eat Udon?

Udon restaurants can be found in every city and even in train stations. There are famous restaurants that serve delicious udon, but the one we will introduce here is a chain called Marugame Seimen. This is the right answer.

This is Marugame-Seimen

Marugame-Seimen

We Japanese love Marugame so much that Marugame has over 1000 stores all over Japan.

Many Marugem-udon at main Tokyo area

The meaning of Marugame is the name of a Japanese city. Udon noodles are also a specialty of Kagawa Prefecture, and Marugame, located in Kagawa, is the origin of the name.

What should I eat?

There are many types of Udon in Marugame. You might get lost. I highly recommend Cold Bukkake Udon and Hot Kake Udon. Those two are the most popular, and I always order those. and they also sell Tempura and rice balls on the counter. You can taste udon and others same time. Here is the menu link.

Tonkatsu is a thickly sliced pork loin or fillet coated with flour, egg, and bread crumbs deep-fried in oil. It is eaten throughout Japan and is popular overseas as one of the most representative Japanese foods. When it comes to tonkatsu, it is common to eat it with tonkatsu sauce, but you can add miso base, and the other way to eat katsu, like Katsudon with tonkatsu on top of rice with eggs, katsu curry with curry, etc., there is a way to eat that is loved by people.

History of Tonkatsu!

The French cutlet was brought to Japan, and in 1897, the Western-style restaurant “Renga-Tei” in Ginza put “pork cutlet” on the menu, which was the beginning of the style of Tonkatsu we know today. Unlike the thin, crispy French cutlets, the thickly cut, juicy pork was famous and became a soul food many people loved.

Japan is the country of Hot Spring. I guess that many people know that. How about Public Bath? Yes, we Japanese know that. We love Public Bath it’s called Sento（銭湯）There are around 500 Public Bath in Tokyo. I want you to try Japanese style Public Bath. I’ll tell you my favorite 5 sento in Tokyo.

How to bath in Sento

I know it is a little confused about it. So I’ll make it straight and simple.

Take off your shoes before enter

Pay money at the desk or from vending machine

Take off your clothes, and not put a Swim suit

Taking a shower first, before going to hot bath

Towels are not allowed in the bathtub

Now you are ready to go, so lets get started!

Kotobuki-Yu at Ueno

Very traditional place

The ginormous hot sauna, salt sauna, and cave water bath completely crisped me up. It’s great to enjoy the atmosphere of old Japan, as if you’ve gone through a type-slip.

Rebun Island is recommended for nature lovers. Rebun Island is the northernmost inhabited island in Japan. The island is called “Floating Island of Flowers” due to its cool climate even in mid-summer, which allows about 300 species of alpine plants to bloom even on the plains.

There are two ways to get to these islands. Ferry and airplane. It takes longer to get there, but it is worth it. Rebun Island is a paradise called the Floating Island of Flowers and is famous for trekking. You can also view Rishiri Fuji on Rishiri Island on the other side of the island and always enjoy the spectacular view. Fresh seafood can be enjoyed on either island.

Hiking and Trekking

Rebun Island is one of the most famous Trekking place in Japan. So many tourists are visiting this small Island for the nature and flower. There are several trekking and hiking courses. Today I’ll tell you two main ones.

Momoiwa Trekking Course

The 6.4-km-long course allows hikers to enjoy hiking while viewing the western coast with its cliffs and blue ocean. The maximum elevation difference is approximately 100 m uphill and 250 m downhill, with relatively few ups and downs. Since most of the hiking is on well-maintained trails, this course is recommended for first-time and beginner hikers.

Enjoy watching the sunrise with Mt.Rishiri

Get up early in the morning to see the sunrise. You can see the sunrise with Rishiri Fuji on Rishiri Island. The sunset is also very beautiful.

Sunrise at KITA NO CANARIA PARK

Eating Special Food in Rebun Island

Rebun Island is one of the best places in Japan to eat fresh seafood. Undan (sea urchin), kelp, etc., are famous. Grilled hokke is the best, so please enjoy it!

Hokke Grilled at Robata Jidori

Staying Traditional Japanese hostel

There are a few resort hotels on Rebun Island. There are guest houses and small homey hotels. Please come and have a relaxing time. I recommend Hamanasu, the inn where I stayed, for its delicious food!

Tokyo is the world’s largest metropolis with approximately 30 million inhabitants. So many places I want you to visit like Shibuya is famous for its scramble crossing, Asakusa for its temples, etc., and Akihabara is famous for its anime. In this blog, we will focus on Otsuka（大塚）Otsuka is located in north part central of Tokyo next to Ikebukuro. The town retains the atmosphere of the old days, but has recently been developed with the construction of a large resort hotel. I Like this City a lot.

What is Jiro-Kei(Jiro-style) Ramen?

I do love Jiro-Kei Ramen so much. It is very famous among the Japanese, but it is domestic. So I’ll explain it. Jiro-Kei Ramen refers to a style or lineage of ramen that takes “Ramen Jiro” as its original, typical, model, or standard. Ramen Jiro is a popular ramen restaurant founded in 1968 in Mita, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Its characteristic feature is the quantity of ramen and the strength of its flavor, which has a substantial and impactful effect. It is characterized by garlic, pork fat, and hard noodles. The Cult of Ramen is Jiro-kei!

lots of garlic, vegetable, pork chashu, and noodles

※Caution & how to order JIRO-RAMEN※

Restaurants serving Jiro-style ramen often have their own rules. Also, the owner is focused on making the ramen and is usually not very friendly. If you go to eat Jiro-style ramen, please understand the following rules before you go.

1) Visit by one or two people (do not go with a large group).
2) Bring a 1000 yen bill in cash (required at the ticket machine).

If your first time, Please choose 小ラーメン ( Basic Ramen)

3) Don’t say anything until your ramen comes out.
4) When the ramen is ready, ask, “Garlic?” If you need garlic, say “please”; if not, say “no”.
5) Take pictures as soon as possible.
6) Eat quickly so that you can finish eating within 15 minutes.

Now you’re ready to go! So let’s get started!

Ramen Jiro Mita-honten

The main branch of the legendary “Ramen Jiro” restaurant, which has more than 50 branches in Japan, is located in Mita, Tokyo. Lines form even when the restaurant opens at 8:30 a.m.; they never disappear for the rest of the day. It is trendy, and the rules are strict, so it may be better to go to another Jiro restaurant first.
